Call me old school if you want but I consider myself to be of an age where you can put a lot of trust in a handshake. Our experience with Fotheringham Homes started with such a handshake. The day we moved in ended with a similar handshake – a happy builder proud of what his company had built and a more than happy couple moving into a dream home.
But what about the bit between…
In my opinion there is a gap between what a builder provides and what the customer wants. I believe the builder is building a house that he needs to sell to make money, but on the flip side of the coin the customer is looking for a home. A home into which they can have their input and a home they have been able to put their mark on.
From our experience we can say the gap between the house Fotheringham Homes built and the home we were looking for was virtually non-existent. Equally important to us was that Michael Fotheringham acknowledged the date we were moving out of our rental property. That date was important to him and was very important to us, and with that date in mind he made sure our new home was ready on time.
We are all busy people so we agreed with Michael Fotheringham that our preferred method of communication was by emails or text. With that agreement in place it all started quickly and ran smoothly. We received an email asking us to make an appointment to look at bathrooms. Given a person’s name in the showroom we duly arrived, made introductions and were shown the different bathrooms and kitchens we could choose from for our new Fotheringham home.
It’s no secret we were surprised at the quality of fittings and fixtures we were being shown, the attention to detail by the showroom staff and the free designs they offered showing the fixtures we had chosen actually placed into our rooms. This choice gave us something we were looking for, the choice to make our own home exactly the way we wanted it. Like many men at 6ft 2” I simply don’t fit into an average bath. The bathroom plan for our new home was quickly revised and I now have a free standing bath I can fit into and a bathroom to be proud of.
Another email arrived, this time we were asked to pick the tiles we wanted. We were given the names of three tile show rooms and appointments were duly made. As we found with the bathroom and kitchen fittings, the quality of the tiles included in the house price were of top quality and diverse enough for us to pick some lovely schemes.
The carpets and underlay were included in the house price and we were invited to go to the carpet warehouse where the manger would meet us. The quality of the carpets was superb but as before if we wanted to upgrade we were able to do this at cost difference. Most of our ground floor is now covered in a beautiful light oak at a cost that barely affected the house price.
Our last minute decision to have a gas fire and surround installed to the front room would have thrown most builders and incurred penalties but far from it. We picked the fire and surround from a showroom in Dundee and the next time we saw it Fotheringham Homes had had it installed and commissioned.
Any builder can only be as good as the team of craftsmen that work with him and in our opinion the craftsmen working on the Fotheringham Homes are just that. Proper craftsmen, craftsmen who can be justly proud of their efforts and workmanship.
On the day of the hand over Michael Fotheringham met us at the house and showed us around. Equipment was demonstrated and features carefully explained. We started the house purchase with a handshake. We completed the purchase of the house on a handshake.
In our opinion Fotheringham Homes are bucking the trend and making beautiful homes that as builders they can be proud to put their name against. From a customer’s view point we are proud and happy to live in our dream home.
In any event there can only be one winner. As I travel into work on a morning, with a grin on my face, I drive past lots of new houses where in my opinion the builder has either come second or probably hardly bothered in the quality race!
From start to end the purchase of our new Fotheringham Home has been a pleasure.
